Get there
Fly into Bangor (BGR), drive 60 miles south to Stonington, and catch the mail boat. (For boat schedules, visit isleauhaut.com.) Summer day trippers are encouraged to use the Duck Harbor access as opposed to the town access. Tickets are first-come, first-served.

Daily discoveries

Day 1: Take the morning mail boat to the island and get settled and ready to walk—there are no cars from here on out. Stroll into town to see the old schoolhouse and cemetery. Mail a postcard from the shoe box of a post office. Have a picnic supper in the late light of summer or dine big at the Keeper's House Inn.

Day 2: Walk/bike to Isle au Haut’s east end. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the rocky point of Eben’s Head overlooking the Atlantic or hike up the Duck Harbor Mountain Trail for lunch with a 360-degree view. On your way back to town or to your lodging, take a dip in Long Pond.

Day 3: Return boat departs Isle au Haut at noon (always check up-to-date schedule). Back on the mainland, eat a lobster roll at Eaton’s Lobster Pool. Explore the streets of Blue Hill for art, antiques, books, coffee, and ice cream; it’ll feel like Times Square after the calm of Isle au Haut.
