Butterflies, like this monarch enjoying the nectar of a goldenrod (Solidago), need more than sweetness to juice up. They drink from water puddles and catch rays on smooth stones. They shelter from the elements (and predators) in shrubs, trees, and vines; many garden shops and catalogs sell butterfly houses.
