Flickering at night like fallen stars nestled into branches, hanging garden lights illuminate trees, hedges, and arbors. Pairing easy-to-find bud vases and strings of white lights left over from Christmas, stylist James Cramer brings romance to the garden for a midsummer’s eve to remember.
What you’ll need
(to cover 31⁄2 feet)
String of 100 white outdoor mini-lights (25 feet)
7 bud vases (find them at crafts stores, flea markets, or online at save-on-crafts.com/vases.html)
Wooden spoon
20-gauge florist wire
Extension cord
Stuff seven twinkle lights into a bud vase, using the end of a spoon. Space out seven more lights to hang between this vase and the next. Stuff seven more lights into a second vase, and continue spacing and stuffing until all vases are full.
Twist an 18-inch length of wire around the mouth of each vase to make a hook that can hang from a branch.
Hang the string via the hooks in shrubbery, over low tree branches, or on an arbor or pergola. Use an outdoor extension cord to plug in the string of lights.
