The City Park
Portland's Forest Park is the nation's largest forested natural area within city limits. Hike, bike, or horseback ride on miles of trails through a towering, green Northwest forest right out downtown's back door. Info, history, trail maps, and more; parks.ci.portland.or.us/

Natural Areas/Forest
The Volcano On a clear day in Portland, you'll glance beyond the cityscape and see a giant cone of white in the distance. Rub your eyes, it's really there. Mount Hood is less than 60 miles away and full of breathtaking views and breathtaking activities like hiking, climbing, biking, paddling, and year-round snow skiing. The Vine
Willamette Valley is quickly becoming one of the hottest wine regions in the country. An easy day trip, including a stop at the Hip Chicks Do Wine winery, is mapped out for you at travelportland.com/visitors/daytrips/vineyards.

The Drive
Take I-84 East to Hood River for a spectacular drive through the Columbia River Gorge. Waterfalls spill off the towering black cliffs a few hundred feet from the road. Take a hike then have a beer at Hood River's Full Sail Brewery. 506 Columbia St., 541/386-2247 or fullsailbrewing.com

The Gardens
International Rose Test Garden: The country's oldest rose garden can be found just outside downtown in Washington Park. Give yourself enough time to explore the 5 acres of roses. 400 SW. Kingston Dr., 503/823-3636 or parks.ci.portland.or.us/gardens/introsetestgarden.htm

Japanese Garden: Enter for a tour of authentic Far East landscaping. Situated in the West Hills area, the garden has some of the city's best Cascade Mountain views. Daily guided tours are offered April through October at 10:45 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. with garden admission. On Mondays it opens at noon so the first tour is at 1 p.m. 611 SW.
