Sewing Organizer Pockets
Easy fabric scrap pockets for the desk organizer seen in our Sept/Oct 2004 issue

photography: Rex Perry

1. Take measurements of the items you want pockets to accommodate, such as bills or invitations, add half an inch to the desired measurements for seam allowance, and cut fabric.

2. Evenly stack unsewn front and back pocket pieces inside-out. (Note: You will be sewing the pockets inside-out). Roll 1-inch-wide pieces of trim (either fabric or ribbon) in half over cording around perimeter of pocket. Take trim edges and sandwich them between the cutout front and back pocket pieces.

3. To attach the ribbon ties at each pocket's upper corner, allow about 8 inches for each tie, and cut. Fold the ribbon in half and sandwich folded edge at top edges of pocket openings.

5. Stitch a straight line around the pocket sides, sandwiching the side trim and ribbon ties between front and back pieces. Turn inside-out and press.

Note: To prevent fabric from fraying while handling, cut out desired shapes with pinking shears.
