Find a Great Arbor
Dress up your garden with a vine-covered arbor.
photography: Jane Colclasure

What garden is complete without a vine-covered arbor? This cottage classic makes an impressive entryway, especially when painted to match a picket fence. If paired with a bench, it can serve as a quiet nook.

An arbor can give any garden a sense of place. A solid structure that’s been there long enough to attract a curtain of vines, it anchors a garden. Climbing roses are the traditional choice, but any vine you love will do. Fast growers like clematis establish a look of age without the wait.

While arbors come in a variety of materials, from iron and copper to no-rot vinyl to wood, we prefer the wooden ones for their ability to look good with and without climbers and the way they can be painted or left to weather beautifully.
